Born to Fly
Michael Ferrari (2009) , 212 pages
Nothing makes Bird happier than flying with her dad. Sometimes he even lets her take over the controls. Bird dreams of flying when she grows up like her idol Amelia Earhart. But in 1942, girls do not fly planes. They are wives and mothers. When Pearl Harbor is bombed, Bird's father goes to war. Bird misses him terribly. When a Japanese American boy turns up, Bird quickly befriends him. Kenji has suffered losses himself and he understands Bird's feelings. When Bird sees a mysterious shape in the bay, Bird and Kenji decide to find out what is going on. By the time they realize what is going on, it is almost too late. Bird and Kenji are in serious danger from a threat much closer to home. Reviewed by Lisa Read the other reviews of this book
