A Yellow Watermelon
Ted M. Dunagan (2008) , 239 pages
It is rural Alabama in 1948 and there is segregation in the cotton fields. But when Ted meets Poudlum, a twelve-year old black boy his own age, integration is not far away. Both boys work the cotton fields on opposite sides and meet in the middle where the fields come together. Together they learn the harsh realities of life and the difficulties of being both white and black in the south. Poudlum teaches Ted how to endure the hard work of the cotton fields. Ted learns about an evil plot to keep the Poudlum family from their property and helps execute a plan to help save their land. Both boys not only become good friends, but also play a major role in the integration of the cotton fields. Reviewed by Emilia
