Owen and Mzee was written by six year-old Isabella Hatkoff, her father Craig Hatkoff
and Dr. Paula Kahumbu, the veterinarian that cares for Owen and Mzee in Kenya.

Owen and Mzee are a baby hippo and a 130 year-old Aldabran tortoise who have become best friends. They ended up together at the Haller Park Preserve in Kenya because of the huge tsunami in December, 2004. Now they sleep, eat and swim together.
