One evening Jack gets lost in the forest after disregarding his mother's warning about the ferocious beasts that live there. He encounters a bear, a lion, and many other frightening animals along the way. Surely these are the beasts his mother was talking about, but they seem kind and gentle. The story is drive by wonderful watercolor illustrations full of movement, emotion, and dark shadows. This book makes a great bedtime read, especially for a chid who is a a little nervous about monsters lurking in the night. Librarian review

Do you ever wonder what would happen if your favorite toys got into a contest? This great story pits one boy's shark against his best friend's train. Who's better at eating pies or shooting baskets? Who will win? Lichtenheld's illustrations are a funny accompaniment to an even funnier query. Librarian review

Who is better, shark or train? It depends on what they're doing, and where. Shark wins the pie eating contest, but train can roast a marshmallow better than anyone! Train is more popular at the carnival, but shark is more graceful going off the high dive. Join shark and train for a reminder that not everyone is good at everything, and some things are hard to be good at at all (sword fighting on a tightrope, anyone?). This book will delight anyone, even if they don't have a competitive spirit!
