Online Resources for Learning at Home With Kids in 6th-8th Grade

While many schools are currently closed, there is a wealth of free online resources to keep kids learning and growing. Here are some great websites for kids in 6th-8th grade.

Educational Resources

BrainPOP: Animated educational site for kids. Learning resource supporting core and supplemental subjects. Includes video games. Free BrainPOP access for schools and families impacted by school closures. For help using BrainPOP, check out this video from our friends at Denver Public Schools.

Denver Public Schools At-Home Activities: Looking for some fun at-home activities? DPS teachers are answering the call - with *hundreds* of ideas for all grades!

Khan Academy: ​​Khan Academy is a learning platform that offers free access to practice exercises, instructional videos and a personalized learning dashboard that empowers learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom.

PBS Learning Media: Extensive source of curated videos and targeted digital resources that are aligned to Common Core and national and state standards and include videos and interactives, as well as audio, documents, and in-depth lesson plans.

Scholastic Learn At HomeDay-by-day projects to keep kids learning, thinking and growing. Projects and activities featuring full Scholastic eBooks.

TIME for Kids: High-quality articles for kids Kindergarten-6th grade on current events, history and social studies topics. Free access to a library of four grade-specific digital editions of TIME for Kids is also available. Free training on keyboarding, digital literacy and coding. Denver Public Schools students can use their student email account and create a password to log in to coursework. 

Museums and Cultural Resources

Anne Frank House Online Learning Materials: In-depth, virtual tour of the Anne Frank House, along with high quality historical learning materials.

Buckingham Palace Virtual Tour: Explore the iconic building through a virtual tour with additional info, short videos and royal family info. 

Google Earth National Park Tours: Virtual tours of 31 United States National Parks. Live Cams: Live streams from animals around the world.'s live cam collection is nicknamed "Pearls of the Planet". The mission is to allow people to experience nature up close and personal so they can fall in love with the world. 

Kennedy Center Digital Stage: Watch extraordinary performances from the Kennedy Center's stages and beyond. We'll feature original works, new clips, and the best of our vast archive which you can also explore on your own.

Lincoln Center At Home: Lincoln Center’s new portal enables families and communities to keep the performing arts front and center.

Metropolitan Museum of Art MetKids: Explore the Metropolitan Museum of art on this site made for, with, and by kids and The Met! Includes an interactive map, videos, fun facts, projects and more.

National Aquarium Baltimore: Live reef cams and robust animal info and at home activities. Web cams have search and find element with links to more info.

OLogy: A science website for kids from the American Museum of Natural History. Includes games, stories, hands-on activities, videos and more.

Smithsonian Fun Stuff for Kids: Learn with Smithsonian with activities, games and featured collections.

SCFD Wonder Looks Good On You: Find Denver and Colorado museums and cultural venues' offerings all in one spot, including free online events, exhibits, classes and other opportunities to experience wonder from your own home! Even in this difficult time, arts and culture have the capacity to lift our spirits and feed our souls. Many SCFD partner organizations are reaching out to help us all through our current challenge with a balm only the creative can provide. ​

STEM Resources

BuzzMath: Interactive math platform with thousands of activities aligned to the Common Core and TEKS state standards. Free through July 1, 2020.

CK-12​​STEM-focused learning platform with free access to high-quality educational materials including standards-aligned, interactive digital textbooks, learning modules, simulations, games and activities and study and quiz opportunities. You can continue to learn at home while schools are closed. Try out fun computer science tutorials, watch videos about computer science concepts, and even build your own projects! Accesible options for offline actvities and activities for smartphone users.

Code Monster: Code Monster from Crunchzilla is an interactive tutorial for kids that focuses on action. Code changes immediately yield visible results. Code Monster is a gentle and fun introduction to programming concepts.

Mystery Science: My​​stery Science is an online science resource, with videos, discussion questions, and hands-on activities. Each lesson starts with a question to spark students’ curiosity.

NASA for Students in 5th to 8th Grades: Activities and opportunities selected by NASA STEM experts.

National Geographic Kids: Educational games, videos, activities and more related to animals, science and the natural world.

PBS Kids Design Squad: Introduces kids to the design process and engineering with videos, games and projects.

Project Hero: Project Hero connects you with local species and ecosystems that need your help. They have created fun, interactive, hands-on "Quests to Help Species & Ecosystems in Trouble." These quests guide the investigation and exploration of pressures on species and ecosystems in trouble in order to design meaningful solutions.

Scratch: ​​Free coding platform. Program your own interactive stories, games, and animations — and share your creations with others in the online community. Scratch helps young people learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively — essential skills for life in the 21st century. Scratch is a project of the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab.
