All children benefit from seeing themselves reflected in the books they read, including children with disabilities. These chapter books are all highly enjoyable reads that feature characters with disabilities. Reading books with differently-abled characters also helps children develop an understanding of life with a disability.
The Americans with Disabilities Act defines a person with a disability as someone who has "a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activity, a person who has a history or record of such an impairment, or a person who is perceived by others as having such an impairment." There are many different ways to define disabilities, just as each person experiences their disability differently. Characters in these books have epilepsy, Down syndrome, mental illness, autism spectrum disorder and others.
