LGBTQIA+ Books for Kids and Families

Children's books are powerful vessels for developing kids' understanding of both themselves and others in the world. For LGBTQIA+ kids and families there's long been a gap in accurate, quality representation in mainstream publishing. That's starting to change. The past few years have seen an uptick in well-told children's stories from larger publishers that feature LGBTQIA+ lead and supporting characters.

There's still room to grow, though. Many #OwnVoices books (stories about queer kids and families that are also written by queer authors) continue to be produced by small and independent presses. Ask a librarian to help you locate an #OwnVoices story today.

From nonfiction books about people, places and history, to enchanting graphic novels, to picture books written by queer authors of color, there's lots to discover at the library. Check out an LGBTQIA+ book to share in honor of Pride Month  - and any day of the year!
